Photovoice – IO ESISTO – storie di donne e bambine nel mondo
Shobha, presidente dell’associazione e fotografa pluripremiata, ha da sempre rivolto il suo sguardo al mondo femminile e all’Asia, paese in cui trascorre la maggior parte della sua vita, raccontando con la fotografia e video, storie poetiche, di denuncia e progetti sociali. In India, la condizione delle bambine e delle donne, così come in troppi paesi del mondo, è davvero difficile, soprattutto nelle zone rurali, dove le donne sono ancora legate e spesso schiave delle tradizioni vivendo dentro strutture patriarcali e religiose. L’idea del workshop nasce da questo continuo impegno nel mettere in luce storie semplici ma piene di significato che, spesso rimangono nell’ombra. La fotografia, può essere un grande strumento di narrazione, per scrivere con la luce storie che valgono la pena di essere raccontate. Aprire i cuori, attraverso la consapevolezza della realtà esistente diventa un nostro dovere etico e morale.
Metodo
Il metodo utilizzato nello svolgimento dei laboratori è quello del “Photovoice” (Wang e Burris 1994).
E’ un metodo di ricerca-azione partecipata che incorpora il processo di documentazione fotografica con la pratica dell’empowerment.
“Photovoice” fornisce ai partecipanti l’opportunità di esprimersi, produrre racconti sulla propria vita quotidiana, migliorare la propria comunità utilizzando il linguaggio delle immagini. Affidando la macchina fotografica digitale, ai membri delle piccole comunità, le persone coinvolte in un progetto “Photovoice” sono messe nella condizione di esprimere, attraverso la ‘concretezza’ e l’impatto emotivo del linguaggio visuale, il proprio sapere, le proprie abilità ed esperienze, rivestendo un ruolo fondamentale durante l’intero processo, che li induce a documentare la necessità di cambiamenti nella comunità, la consapevolezza critica della situazione storico–sociale induce cambiamento. Il Photovoice, negli anni, si è rivelato un metodo efficace per analizzare esperienze di vita quotidiana, sviluppare empowerment e dare voce a soggetti emarginati. Un processo “Photovoice”, rivolto alle bambine e alle donne indiane, che vivono in condizioni di emarginazione, rappresenta quindi un’opportunità di costruire e confermare le loro capacità, di sviluppare competenze sociali e pervenire ad una maggiore comprensione delle sfumature e della complessità della realtà sociale che li circonda, con lo scopo di attivare dei cambiamenti attraverso la divulgazione delle loro storie in immagini.
Beneficiari
I destinatari del workshop in questa fase del progetto, sono le bambine e/o le ragazze di ONG locali indiane. Saranno candidati 10/12 bambine/ragazze per la partecipazione alle attività previste dal workshop. L’età delle bambine e delle ragazze è compresa tra 8 e i 18 anni.
Azioni del workshop
In una prima fase, ai partecipanti del laboratorio sarà chiesto di raccontare se stessi, la propria comunità o il loro sguardo sul loro quotidiano: chi sono io, la mia famiglia, il mio ruolo nella famiglia, la mia casa, i miei nonni, la mia terra, mio padre, le tradizioni e la loro religiosità. In seguito, partendo da un’analisi delle fotografie scattate, post produrremmo il lavoro insieme ai partecipanti, discutendo e ponendo particolare accento sulla tematica “Io esisto”, cercando di sviluppare i racconti a partire dalle fotografie stesse.
Obiettivi del workshop
L’obiettivo generale è quello di avvicinare i partecipanti al mondo della fotografia, come strumento terapeutico e sociale, per recuperare un’attitudine ludica, spesso dimenticata da queste bambine, che vivono quotidianamente situazioni di grande responsabilità.
1)Sviluppo della capacità espressiva e comunicativa attraverso lo strumento artistico fotografico:
Mettere in risalto le loro potenzialità, capacità creative e comunicative; fornendo loro la possibilità di raccontare se stesse e la realtà sociale dalla quale provengono, attraverso il mezzo fotografico.
2) Sensibilizzazione dell’opinione pubblica, attraverso le realizzazioni di una mostra, di un video documentario e l’edizione del libro che saranno largamente promosse sia in Italia sia in India. Attraverso le attività di autofinanziamento e fund-raising che saranno realizzate in occasione della diffusione del materiale prodotto.

Mother India School – Progetti itineranti è un’associazione culturale, creata da Shobha nel 2007, diretta da Shobha e Soraya Gullifa, con la collaborazione di Monica Rostagno, un luogo di scambio tra oriente e occidente, punto di incontro di varie attività tra cui fotografia, video, workshop e volontariato sociale. Le sue attività sono itineranti, secondo i progetti rivolti spesso all’universo femminile per dare voce, attraverso storie, a donne coraggiose che si battono per un reale cambiamento.

Photography Workshop with Shobha
Photovoice – I EXIST – Stories of women and girls worlwide
Shobha, President of the Association and award-winning photographer, has turned her gaze to the female world and Asia, where she spent most of her life, telling us through the art and poetry of photography and video, stories about social misbehavior and social projects. In India, the plight of girls and women, as well as in too many countries of the world it’s really tough, especially in rural areas, where women are still linked and often slaves to the patriarchal structures and religious traditions. The idea of the workshop is the result of this continuous effort to highlight the simple stories, often full of meanings that remain in the shadows. Photography can be a great tool for narrative writing using the light to tell stories that are worth telling. In being aware of the existing reality we feel that to keep an open heart is our moral and ethical duty.
The method used in the performance of laboratories is the “Photovoice” (Wang and Burris 1994), a method of participatory action research that incorporates the documentation process with empowerment practice.
Photovoice” gives participants the opportunity to express themselves, produce stories about their daily lives, improve their community using the language of images.
By trusting digital camera to members of small communities the subject involved in “Photovoice” project are put in a position to express themself, through the ‘ concreteness ‘ and the emotional impact of Visual language, their knowledge, their skills and experience, playing a key role throughout the process, which causes them to document the need for changes in the community and the critical awareness of social and historical situation can causes change.
Photovoice, over the years, proved to be an effective method for analyzing everyday life experiences, develop empowerment and giving voice to marginalized individuals.
A “Photovoice” project, addressed to Indian girls and women living in marginalized conditions, represents an opportunity to build and confirm their skills, to develop social skills and achieve a greater understanding of the nuances and complexity of the social reality that surrounds them, in order to activate the changes through the disclosure of their stories through images.
Beneficiaries
Recipients of the workshop, in this phase of the project, are the children and/or girls of local NGOs. There will be 10/12 girls candidate to participate at the workshop activities. The girls’age should be between 8 and 18 years.
Workshop actions:
In a first phase, the participants of the workshop will be asked to tell themselves, their community or their own view on their everyday life: who am I, my family,my role into the family, my home, my grandparents, my land, my father, traditions and their religion. As a result, starting from an analysis of photographs taken, post producing the work with participants, discussing and putting emphasis on the theme “I exist”, we’ll try to develop the story from photography itself
Workshop Objectives:
The overall objective is to introduce participants to the world of photography, as a therapeutic and social tool, to retrieve a playful attitude, often forgotten by these teenagers, living daily situations of big responsibility
1)Development of expressive and communicative skills through artistic photographic tool: to highlight their potential, creative abilities and communication skills; giving them the opportunity to tell themselves and the social reality from which they come, through the medium of photography 2) To sensitize public awareness, through the creation of an exhibition, a video documentary and the book that will be broadly promoted both in Italy and in India. Self-financing activities and fund-raising will take place on the occasion of the promotion of finished product.

Mother India School-touring Projects is a cultural association founded by Shobha in 2007, directed by Shobha and Soraya Gullifa, in collaboration with Monica Rostagno, as a place of exchange between East and West, a meeting point for various activities including photography, video, workshops and social volunteering. Its activities are itinerant, according to projects aimed to give a voice to, through their stories, courageous women who are fighting for real change.
